This book is the first volume of TAIGA (river in Japanese) project supported by Japanese government which examined the hypothesis that the TAIGA can be categorized into rivers of sulfur, hydrogen, carbon (methane) and iron and the autotrophic bacteria/archaea that are inextricably associated with respective types of rivers. Recognition of substantial biosphere that is harboured beneath the seafloor changed our views on the true extent of Earth s biosphere, global biogeochemical cycle and the origins of life. Such sub seafloor ecosystems are sustained by hydrothermal circulations or TAIGA that carry chemical energy to the chemosynthetic microbes living in the extreme environment. The results of the project have been summarized comprehensively in 50 papers and this book covers an overall introduction and topics on mid-ocean ridge system of the Indian Ocean.
